State technology Planning

As part of our strategic planning session at NSBA T+L2, I heard a short dialog in the aftermath about how to put together the new State Technology Plan. If you have ideas or comments, please submit them here!

One intriguing idea comes from Lowell Ensey who suggested that we both follow the Federal Plan's example and practice what we preach and collect a student group to write the plan. We, as professionals would guide the process, present problems and facilitate the dialog. Ultimately, we could have a plan that not just included the kids, but was written BY THE KIDS.

I'd love to hear thoughts on this from you!

This is indeed an intriguing idea that has some great potential. We will be considering this approach as the planning process develops.

Students are the center of this plan, and what better way of helping make that happen! I would welcome ideas on how we can make this student centered, directed, and written approach work.

One comment I heard following the workshop was that our student representative, Kelly, while quite articulate and certainly an advocate of technology, represented the voice of a minority of students. It will be important to involve a wide range of students in the process so that our planning and vision is balanced. Just as we take care to not load our committees with high-end users, we will need to intentionally get and value input from a very diverse student population, also.

I have no problem with the suggestion, yet would like to see what we mean by "students doing the planning." Perhaps a few more details about how precisely the feds went about this would be useful before we ask people to respond to such a hypothetically exciting concept.

We have often involved students in technology and bond planning here at BVSD.

I have recently conducted focus group sessions within my own district and other districts. Student focus groups were a pivotal part of these efforts. Please don't get angry, but if we involve only students like the one we saw at NSBA in a state planning effort, we will not be well served. I always seek to form balanced viewpoints, and the speaker at NSBA did not appear to represent the views of most students I have interacted with. So the questions remain:

1) How will student participation be valued and constructed;
2) what do we mean by "student?"

I agree that a cross section of students need to be involved as part of the answer. The other part will need to be district and state staff that have the ability to direct the process. The staffs need to be a part of the student discussions, and my hope would be to enlighten the staff as to how students use technology and how they would like to use technology. Neil

I attended the workshop on Technology Standards on Friday and I would like feedback on the technology literacy definition for K-12. The one thing that we struggled with the most was what is Information Technology? We came to some consensus when the term "Literacy in the Digital Age" was suggested. There is not any mention of technology is the definition. Instead solving problems, communicate, informed decisions, new knowledge, collaboration, and ethics are the terms that describe "Literacy in the Digital Age". I would like thoughts on a definition that describes what we do, without any mention of technology in the definition.

As we discussed yesterday at our department meeting, I will contact Kent Tamsen and we plan to take the lead on the state strategic/tech plan.

Hey this blog is not about systems

I have been doing hours of research on "strategic planning" and it brought me to your blog on State technology Planning. Anyways, CALET Member I was reading your blog and I think it is really cool. It’s really a pleasure reading your posts! Keep up the great work.

Keep blogging away :-)
