Student laptops in school
Some students have expressed a desire to bring their own laptop computers to school. The student handbook states that students may not have any electronic device at school. What are your thoughts on allowing students to bring their laptop?

It's okay at college; actually it's very practical; but for high school students .... ? **sceptical grin** I have my doubts.

I think we'll need to first figure out a method for security of student owned, high value items like a laptop at school. Perhaps locking desks so the student can secure the equipment when not in use in the classroom with an adult. Otherwise, its all about modifying the teaching method to make the best use of resources at hand.

I have some concerns about the software that is installed on the student machines. The way that our network is designed, the student could download all sorts of software into their roaming profile and then distribute the software to others violating intellectual property rights/copyrights. Currently we have somewhat of a handle on this, would we be opening up our network to all of the software on the student notebook?
Another issue is viruses and such. We are looking into software policies that will quarantine the student desktop until the policy determines if the guest machine is up-to-date. But we are not there yet.
